While it may seem like a soft, fluffy material that almost resembles cotton candy, batt fiberglass insulation is actually primarily composed of small, discontinuous glass fibers. Such tiny shards help resist heat flow by trapping pockets of air and are also effective for absorbing sound. However, they can also pose a safety hazard if they come into contact with the skin, nose, or eyes or are inhaled. As it flows, blasts of air separate the glass into short fibers, which are collected and woven in with the other materials to form the fleecy material known as batt fiberglass insulation.
